For only the second time, PPAI has collaborated with Promotional Products Professionals of Canada to deliver the Canadian Sales Volume Study for 2024. The data underscores PPAI’s commitment to strategically expanding its international research leadership.

  • The study estimates the industry’s market size at $1.35 billion CAD (USD $983 million) based on 2024.
  • This marks a modest 0.81% growth over the previous year for the country.

The year-over-year growth numbers are modest and reveal a lower-than-expected market size for Canada.

*Notably, the numbers were compiled before the current U.S. administration took office and, therefore, prior to the U.S. placing tariffs on Canada and other countries, which have impacted both the U.S. and Canadian economies.

  • The survey was conducted by U.S.-based Relevant Insights between December 2024 and January 2025.

“This second study establishes a critical baseline for year-over-year comparison,” says Jonathan Strauss, president and CEO of PPPC. “The ability to track industry data and trends over time is especially important now, as Canadian businesses navigate an ever-changing marketplace shaped by evolving tariffs and a new U.S. administration.”

Where The Industry Is Heading

Beyond total sales volume, the study was able to isolate certain purchasing trends within the market north of America’s border.

“We’re pleased to offer Canadian-specific insights that empower our members to plan and grow strategically,” says Strauss.

  • Retail branded products made up 19% of Canadian promo sales.
  • Sustainable products accounted for 17% of sales, meaning that the Candian market continues to outpace the U.S. in the adoption of eco-forward products.

Other findings included:

  • Online sales contributed $216.4 million CAD or 16% of total volume, which represented modest year-over-year growth.
  • The top sectors for sales were business services (13.7%), construction (11.5%) and education (10.5%).
  • About 15% of sales came from non-industry sourcing (outside traditional industry supliers).

Expectations for 2025 are a bit trickier to pin down. On a positive note, 63% of Canadian distributors expect to see sales growth, though a smaller number see that translating to higher profits.

While the responses can be read as cautious optimism for 2025, it must again be stated that these responses were gathered before U.S. tariffs were announced in early 2025, which is a likely factor in many distributors’ views of the near future.
