It’s go time! The PPAI Expo show floor opens today. Here’s your chance to get out there, meet exhibitors face to face and see what’s new across the industry. With so much happening at once, it’s easy to wonder how you should spend your time and make the most of this once-a-year event. As you move from booth to booth, it’s not about how many stops you make or how quickly you collect information. Instead, it’s about slowing down enough to have meaningful conversations that actually stick.

In this issue of PromoPro Daily, we highlight a blog post from Lighthouse Exhibits that explains how to make the most of every booth conversation. The goal isn’t to say the perfect thing or nail a script. The goal is to show up and listen.

Want to make the most of this week? Read on for a quick refresher on how to slow down, stay focused and make each booth discussion more effective.

  1. Don’t just ask for a name and move on. You obviously want to get the other person’s name, but it’s best not to jump into a pitch immediately. If an exhibitor gets your name and then immediately launches into a sales pitch, they’re probably more concerned with delivering their message than learning about your business needs. The post recommends starting conversations around the show itself, what caught your attention or what trends you’re noticing. From there, let the discussion happen organically.

  2. Don’t get too friendly too fast. The post recommends being sociable and personable, but always professional and intentional. Rapport matters, but context does too. For example, discussing family details may or may not be appropriate depending on how the conversation unfolds. When in doubt, keep your focus on promo, business goals and shared opportunities.

  3. Don’t disparage competitors. Your business doesn’t operate in a vacuum, the post says, and you’re surrounded by others who offer similar services. The recommendation is simple: keep discussions professional and avoid negative talk altogether. Instead, focus on what sets you apart, the problems you solve best and how you help partners succeed.

With the show floor officially open, this is your opportunity to uncover ideas and solutions you can use in the year ahead. Go beyond quick hellos and rushed exchanges. Take time to engage, ask thoughtful questions and really listen. That’s how you turn Expo conversations into partnerships that last long after you get back from Vegas.
