The year ahead could be your greatest sales year yet. You have a clean slate to become not just a good sales professional, but the greatest – someone who stands out as the best in the promo industry.

Like the greatest of all time in other fields, sales GOATs are committed, driven and focused on constantly elevating their game. From prioritizing learning to embracing automation, there are several skills that can help you enter your sales superstar era.

In this issue of PromoPro Daily, we share some tips from writer Sam Lauron on how you can have your greatest sales year of all time. Read on for some skills to work on now.

Use video. Whether you use it to establish rapport with new leads, answer questions or re-engage with prospects, adding videos to your communications can make them more engaging. To make your videos stand out, Lauron recommends using the best lighting, making sure your filming area looks professional and filming with a quality webcam and mic.

Be genuine. People know when you’re being inauthentic. Don’t pretend to like the same things as your clients and prospects. Instead, be genuinely yourself. For example, if you’re meeting a client for lunch, try saying something like, “I’m not a big fan of sushi, but I know you like it, so I’ll give it another try with you.”

Learn continually. Sales is always evolving, and you should be too, Lauron says. Approach the year ahead with the understanding that you can never complete sales – there’s always something new to learn about the promo industry, your clients and an ever-changing landscape.

Dig into AI and machine learning. HubSpot research shows that 59% of sales reps don’t yet use AI when communicating with prospects. Be intentional about experimenting with AI tools this year. Lauron says it can help you connect with your audience better and boost your sales.

Create deeper client relationships. There’s great value in retaining your existing clients. Not only do they lead to more sales, but they can also bring in referrals. To be a GOAT, you must focus on taking your existing relationships deeper. Ask questions and find ways to make things work better for them.

Embrace automation. Use things like CRM tools and marketing automation software to streamline lead nurturing, guide your follow-ups and track engagement. Doing so can boost your efficiency and help ensure no leads fall through the cracks.

Improving your sales EQ. If you want to be a sales GOAT, this is a necessary skill. EQ, or emotional intelligence, requires an ability to lead, influence and control emotions.

What skills are you prioritizing this year? When you commit to constantly improving yourself, you can not only boost your sales but also enhance your career.
