IRVING-BASED ASSOCIATION SPONSORS FOOD DRIVE
Irving, Texas, (May 12, 2010) Staff members at Promotional Products Association International (PPAI) wrapped up their annual food drive this year—collecting 6,121 pounds of goods—to benefit a local food pantry. Since 2008 the Association has donated more than 12,000 pounds of goods toward to cause.
Working through the PPAI Community Services Committee, an internal group that coordinates the many outreach projects of the nonprofit trade association, the entire PPAI staff was grouped into teams that competed to see which could bring in the most food for the Food Pantry at Irving Cares. Food items were given a point value, based on what was identified by the Pantry as most needed. Each week, a designated list of food items were assigned bonus points and weekly totals were posted for each team.
Irving Cares is a United Way agency dedicated to providing Irving residents with temporary assistance and training to promote self-sufficiency. With such programs as food pantry access, financial assistance, patient transportation, psychotherapy counseling, employment services and medical prescriptions discounts, Irving Care is able to buffer the financial crunch several families are experiencing. Through its food pantry, groceries are provided to those needing emergency, temporary food supplies. Assistance is also provided as a supplement to senior citizens on a minimal fixed income.
"The annual food drives from PPAI have become a highly-anticipated event for Irving Cares. They (PPAI) determine which items are most needed by our Food Pantry, then they work hard to get those items donated," said Teddie Story, Irving Cares executive director. "We distributed over 485,000 pounds of groceries last fiscal year and only 28 percent of the groceries we distributed were donated, so when we have the opportunity to specify to our food drive donors what we need, it helps us adjust what we then have to purchase."
